A Little Piece of the Smokies - Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Rainbow Falls Trail sign along a wooded hiking trail in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

A few years ago, I visited the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, and I absolutely loved it. The mountains, the little towns, the old wooden cabins – everything about this place has such a special charm. It's one of those places I'd happily go back to.

Gatlinburg is a great place to stay while exploring the Smokies. If you're looking for somewhere to spend the night, Bear Creek Inn is one option worth checking out. And a little heads-up: you're in bear country here, so don't be too surprised if you spot a black bear! Just make sure to admire them from a safe distance.

Pancakes, Waterfalls & Mountain Roads

I'd start the morning with a proper Southern breakfast at Flapjack's Pancake Cabin. Because honestly, what's better than a big stack of pancakes before heading into the mountains?

After breakfast, the Rainbow Falls Trail is a beautiful way to explore the national park. Forest trails, mountain air, and a waterfall waiting at the end – just bring comfortable hiking shoes and allow plenty of time.

Another place I wouldn't miss is Cades Cove. The scenic loop road takes you through a gorgeous valley surrounded by mountains, with old log cabins, churches, and historic farm buildings along the way. It almost feels like stepping back into the early pioneer days.

One thing to know: the road is one-way, and traffic can get pretty slow, especially when everyone stops to admire the scenery or wildlife. So don't rush it.

BBQ & Downtown Gatlinburg

After a long day outdoors, I'd head to Bennett's Pit Bar-B-Que for some good Southern BBQ. Then finish the evening with a walk through downtown Gatlinburg, checking out the little shops and enjoying the mountain-town atmosphere.

And if you have a few more days, definitely make time for Pigeon Forge. There's plenty to explore, and it's worth giving the town a full day or two rather than just passing through.

The Smokies have a little bit of everything I love about Tennessee – beautiful nature, old-fashioned charm, good food, and that feeling of being somewhere completely different.

I'd go back in a heartbeat. 🤎
